Go to any pro shop or golf store and take a look at the range of putters for sale. There is a bewildering variety of forms of club lengths and styles. More types and variations in putters than any other club in the bag.
If I had to quickly find what's on the screen that you can come across some or all of the following (and possibly some more)
Here is a list (not exhaustive) list of what you can find:
Long putters
Short Putters
Heavy Putters
Putters Light
2-Ball Putters
3-Ball Putters
Putters Butt
Mallet head putters
D-shape putters
Blade Putters
Face balanced putters
... and the list goes on!
With the election of all this, how to know if you have a putter that will work for you? Well, first, do not get overwhelmed by the choice of all. Here are my recommendations on getting a golf club:
Invest in a decent putter!
You can spend many 100's of dollars on a driver can only use 10 times a round. Remember that you came almost 50% of his shots with the putter, to get something that will be comfortable. Select putter relatively "standard"

Preferably putters have real green (or green synthetic), instead of putting on the carpet shop. A hit real balls in actual holes in a real green will give a real feel.
Get the custom fitted putter
Most likely is that any putter you can buy still not be very appropriate for you. After all we are not all the same height, weight and shape, so it would be a bit much to expect a shelf to be appropriate for us all. Having professional monitoring of the length and lie angle for you and adjust if necessary. This should be part of the service when buying a golf club at any decent golf shop or golf shop.
